About Raquel

Raquel Marquez Maden is currently a member of the San Ysidro School District Governing Board. Raquel also serves as Legislation Co-chair for the San Diego County School Boards Association.

Previously, Raquel served as Senior Policy Advisor to City of San Diego Council President Ben Hueso in District 8. In the District 8 office, Raquel represented the councilmember in the policy areas of Public Safety and Neighborhood Services, Arts and Culture, and League of Cities.

Prior to serving as a representative for Councilmember Hueso, Raquel served as the Operations Manager for Blurb Magazine published by the Sweetwater Union High School District, and, in addition, wrote her own column for the San Diego Union Tribune's Spanish language publication,Enlace.

Upon graduating from San Diego State University, Raquel immediately ran for public office. In that election, she received 50% more votes than any other previous candidate. In winning her race for the San Ysidro School Board, she became, at the time, the youngest school board trustee in the State, and subsequently the youngest school board President in the United States.

Raquel had previously been a classified employee at the San Ysidro School District before joining the Board of Trustees. There she worked in public relations; connecting the school district, parents and health care resources throughout the state.

In addition to her duties on the Governing Board , Raquel is the Director of Operations of the San Ysidro Chamber of Commerce.  She lives in the Dolphin Cove neighborhood of Ocean View Hills with her husband Gareth, and her son Enrique.
